I hate knitting. With a passion. In primary school we had needlework as a compulsory subject and had to knit a jersey for ourselves. I think I knitted about two rows. My mom finished the damn thing. Since B is not medically fit for a job in the real world, she has taken up knitting as a hobby over the last two years. Enter Beanies. Bedsocks. Mittens. Weird woolly Thingamabobs.
Enter me into the world of stitches, ribbings, cast-ons, knit-two-togethers… Not kicking and screaming, as I had promised the “in-sickness-and-in-health” thing (damn, why did I not think to add, ‘but not in knitting’?), but passively resistant – okay, okay, rolling over and assisting-on-demand (I am a pushover after all!).
So now I am scouring the Internet for Free Easy Beanie Knitting Patterns for Beginners, as the missus and computers are only nodding acquaintances. I watch YouTube videos with her on The technique of knitting into the stitch below. I am learning about Garter and Moss stitches, Fisherman’s rib, Double Basket Case… uhm, I mean, Weave.
The pooch’s contribution is to demand a seat on her mother’s lap, never mind if said lap is occupied by balls of wool or knitting in progress. And the knitting is put aside for her. Fat help she is.
The house has being taken over by a gazillion Humpty Dumpty creatures in all colors, their little beady eyes following my every move. I am sure I saw one giggling over me succumbing to the Knitting Monster. When, oh when, is the next hand-over of knitting to the animal charity we support?!
Sigh. What we would not do for love…
